Susan Deer Cloud in Rochester

Susan Deer Cloud will be reading at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY, on Wednesday March 18, 2009, at 7 pm in the Golisano Academic Gateway Mid-level. It’s free and open to the public.

Directions to Golisano Academic Gateway are simple.  Just park in A/B lot in front of Skalny Bldg (science), enter Skalny, walk down hallway through building and exit.  You will see another bldg  (Gateway) in from of you.  Enter Gateway.  You will see the Cyber Cafe.  Go up the stairs one flight, turn left and the midlevel room is directly in front of you.

NOLA poet comes to RIT in April

bill_lavender3Bill Lavender, New Orleans poet, editor and publisher, will read at Boulder Coffee, 100 Alexander St., Rochester, at 7 pm on April 16 and also give a presentation at 4 pm April 16 in the College of Liberal Arts Faculty Commons (06.1251) at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The director of the Low Residency Creative Writing program at the University of New Orleans and managing editor of the University of New Orleans Press will lead a workshop  for students, and later do a public reading and book signing.

Lavender’s poetry and essays have appeared in numerous magazines and journals such as Jubilat, New Orleans Review, Gulf Coast Review, YAWP, Fell, Poetics Today and Contemporary Literature. His books also include I of the Storm (Trembling Pillow 2006), While Sleeping (Chax Press 2004), look the universe is dreaming (Potes and Poets 2002), and Guest Chain (Lavender Ink 1999). He is currently co-editing an issue of Big Bridge on New Orleans poetry. His most recent book, transfixion, is coming in 2009.





The five-day NOLA tour

nyflp takes center stage at sites throughout New Orleans, The Big Easy,  on the Fingers Lakes to Lake Pontchartrain Tour. The March 4 to 8 series of poetry readings and talks is the first in a series of exchanges organized by the group to showcase the quality and variety of creative writing and artists throughout New York state.  The aim is to establish ties and talent exchanges with writers and creative writing programs in New Orleans  and other parts of the country to open the New York Finger Lakes region writers to other literary styles, skills and perspectives.  Highlights of the tour:

•    A March 5 reading to students and faculty at Loyola University of New Orleans, sponsored by the English Department, Creative Writing and Women’s Studies faculties.

•    That same evening, nyflp is featured at the 17 Poets! Reading Series, hosted by Bill Lavender, University of New Orleans director of the Creative Writing MFA Residency and managing editor of University of New Orleans Press.

•    nyflp headlines on March 6 at The Olde Towne Arts Center Reading Series in Slidell, Louisiana.
